Pleasure v. Enjoyment

For some, a good life is a life of pleasure. I’ve come to believe that instead a good life is a life of enjoyment. Mihaly Csikszentmihaly writes in Good Business:

The experience of happiness in action is enjoyment—the exhilarating sensation of being fully alive. Seeking out pleasure is also a powerful source of motivation, but pleasure does not foster change; it is, rather, a conservative force, one that makes us want to satisfy existing needs, to achieve an equilibrium, comfort, and relaxation.

Pleasure is the satiated feeling after a good meal.

Enjoyment is the knowledge, craft, judgment and care of creating it.

Enjoyment is every bite.

Pleasure is when it’s all done.

Life is about movement. Moving towards like sailors responding to a sirens call.

It’s not about getting everything we can from life,

that’s pleasure.

It’s about giving everything we can through life,

that’s enjoyment.

Enjoy today. Enjoy this moment.

With Love.

With Service.
